Save/Restore/Share settings
Adding the ability to backup ones own settings and to be able to share it with other families to create a strong list that every one has worked on.
This is a feature we are considering adding in a future release of K9 – however, we are wondering if people want it more for “Save/Restore” functionality (for backup purposes), “Share” functionality (to share, for example, white or black lists with friends), or “Central Management” functionality (to keep multiple K9 installations in-sync with one another).
Please give your feedback and suggestions as comments. Also, if you are looking for “Centralized Management” functionality, you may want to also add your votes to the “Remote/Central Management” idea at https://k9webprotection.uservoice.com/forums/84793-general/suggestions/1206565-remote-central-administration

Agree, I need to uninstall and reinstall in order to troubleshoot a network issue. This means I need a configuration backup. Also, I use this on more than one computer, so the ability to duplicate settings would help.

I would use it for central management/sync of multiple Mac and pc in the house.
This is a must have as my custom URL lists are extensive (both white and black)

I would use this for backup.
This would save lots of tedium having to otherwise re-enter a long list of URLs or keywords after a reinstall.
Also good for self-modders who "set and forget" their settings and are likely to forget them after not checking settings for a while.

I think a Save/Restore is imperative for backup. Many a time I have had to uninstall and then reinstall and lost all my settings!!!

I am at a virtual school and we have over 300 laptops the stuudents use at home. We are constantly reimaging the laptops and would really appreciate a way to copy settings or to change the product key after install. Is there a file that we could change the product key?

I am primarily interested in the ability to keep multiple K9 installations in-sync with one another (centrally managed functionality). However, the ability to share/give a configuration with another family, is also a great idea.

Here's an easy workaround:
1. Download iMacros at http://www.iopus.com/download/imacros/ and install it.
2. Download whitelist.iim at http://goo.gl/nk8OJ and save in the macro folder.
3. Log in to K9 and go to Web Site Exceptions.
4. Using iMacros, run the whitelist.iim.You'll now have about 200 sites added to your whitelist with just a few clicks.
P.S. The same method can be applied for blacklists or keyword lists.

I think I have a workaround to export & import lists. Do the Mods let posting the method, or can individuals post links to their lists in Dropbox (with email address) and I'll format it so it can be imported?

Just being able to export a configuration and import to another computer would be a simple and great step forward - just make it a paying feature, even low priced ..

This feature would be great for mass deployement.

The whole "create a strong list that everyone has worked on" sounds like a marvellous idea, but isn't that what the K9 database already does? Surely it's better to encourage people to submit problematic sites for review than to build and share their own little block or allow lists.

For years I have edited my own hosts file to block websites. That list is extremely long now. If you can allow copy and paste blacklist / import blacklist, that will save me a huge time of typing each address line by line.

both options, as share and as backup is a great help, and for the whitelist and blacklist plus the level of filtering, in other words all of it.

The Save/Restore or Share functionality would be a tremendous help. Typing the list of curse words etc. in Keywords as tedious as it is repugnant. Similarly, the Always Allow & Always Block lists can have dozens or even hundreds of sites entered and it's extremely time- and effort-consuming to retype on a new computer, be it your own or a friend's. As others have pointed out, this functionality can be achieved without touching the actual settings file in the registry by simply allowing mass import of Keywords & Allowed or Blocked Sites from an Excel sheet.

This sound like a very good idea! Please add this feature so that a built up list can be used.
Nice idea!

I agree with Sal, export and import sounds good as it takes a lot of time to be able to make a perfect policy and to replicate it on other computers (especially if the policy is extensive) it would make a parents job much easier!!!
Please add this feature ASAP!

Allow to export and import white and blacklists. Most homes have more than 1 computer.

I would personnally love to have this feature available in K9 for the future !
Especially, it would be useful for backup purposes (like reformatting your computer) or if you want to install K9 on another computer. For the moment I have all these things printed out but it would be great not to have to type them and configure everything again whenever you want to install K9 on a new computer or you want to reinstall it for some reason. -

Mostly I need the Save/Restore functionality, but mostly with the purpose in mind of sharing between computers and getting a new computer up to date (home use). I do a lot of keyword and website entry in K9, and every time I have an old pc die or get a better one, I either lose all the fine tuning I spent excruciating hours working on, or I just don't have the energy to enter each item line by line all over again.
If the settings could be saved as a separate file, perhaps, then the file could be shared between friends, home pcs, and on-site management of others' pcs. This method could also probably be used in conjunction with remote/central management. I would STRONGLY caution you, however, that a "settings" file should only be used for upload purposes, or something along those lines. If a settings file could be deleted from a pc by a skilled user who is not the administrator, thereby resetting K9, all functionality would be lost for adults trying to quit porn. Therefore a settings file should not be relied upon by K9 on an ongoing basis. Also, it would be helpful if such a file was encrypted or something, so that it does not become a stumbling block for users (non-admin) who don't really want the temptation of reading a list of great sites to get porn, I mean, sites to block in K9. :P
Thanks for your hard work!

For me it would be the need to have "Save/Restore" functionality (backup purposes).
